Trancoso Day Trip
On this day trip, we'll visit Trancoso, a town full of history and peculiarities where we'll stroll through its old town & admire its dreamy beaches.
Porto Seguro is worth 4 to 6 days: for the Historic City, the beaches and beach clubs of the north, a day in Arraial d'Ajuda and another in Trancoso, with time to rest. There is no clear dry season: it rains all year, with highs of 26 to 29 °C; September, August and May are the months with the least rain (129 to 145 mm) and March is the wettest (217 mm over 17 days). Summer, from December to March, is high season.
Porto Seguro is where Brazil began: it was here, in April 1500, that Cabral's fleet landed and the country entered history. Five centuries later, the Costa do Descobrimento (Discovery Coast) has become one of the busiest beach hubs in Brazil's Northeast: a string of beaches lined with coconut palms and reefs that runs from the buzz of the megabarracas of Taperapuã to the barefoot charm of Trancoso and Arraial d'Ajuda, across the river. At the top of the hill, the Historic City holds the oldest churches and landmark in the country.
The climate is warm and humid all year, with highs between 26 and 29 °C and warm seas. There is no clear dry season: it rains all year, with fall and winter, from March to July, a little wetter. Summer, from December to March, is the hottest, sunniest and most crowded time, the absolute high season. As along the whole Bahian coast, the sun usually returns quickly between showers, and the heat gives no respite.
Porto Seguro is three destinations in one. The historic Cidade Alta (Upper Town) is good for an afternoon of churches and the Marco do Descobrimento (Discovery Landmark); the northern shoreline, at Taperapuã, is the realm of the megabarracas playing axé (Bahian pop music), with music and facilities all day; and, crossing the river by ferry, Arraial d'Ajuda and Trancoso offer the most charming and sophisticated side, with the Quadrado of Trancoso, stone streets and beaches such as Praia do Espelho, among the most beautiful in Brazil. It is a beach destination for every kind of traveler: family, party and couple, each in their own corner.

Brazil is in the Southern Hemisphere, so the seasons are the reverse of those in Europe and North America: summer falls between December and March and winter between June and August. In Porto Seguro the change of season is small: from December to April the high is 29 °C and the low is 22 °C, and in July and August, the coolest months, the average high is 26 °C and the low is 19 °C. The reference climate is that of the Ilhéus weather station.
There is no clear dry season, but there are differences. The months with the least rain are September, with 129 mm over 13 days, August, with 134 mm over 16 days, and May, with 145 mm over 14 days. The wettest are March, with 217 mm over 17 days, April, with 205 mm over 15 days, and June and July, with 201 mm each (over 16 and 18 days).
The difference between months is small and you can travel all year; September is the month with the least rain. Summer is high season, with heat, sun and crowds at their peak; outside it, prices drop and the beaches are quieter. No month guarantees the weather.
