Brasilia Panoramic Tour
On this panoramic tour of Brasília, we'll explore the center of Brazil's capital and discover the city's main areas. You'll love it!
Brasília is worth 3 to 4 days: one for the Esplanada dos Ministérios (Ministries Esplanade) and the Praça dos Três Poderes (Three Powers Plaza), another for the palaces and Lake Paranoá, and the late afternoon for the sunset at the JK Bridge or the TV Tower. The driest months run from June to September, with highs of 25 to 29 °C and 1.5 to 38 mm of rain a month.
Brasília did not grow slowly like Brazil's other capitals: it was planned and built in just under four years, and inaugurated on April 21, 1960, to draw the country toward its interior. The master plan is by Lúcio Costa, who laid out the city in the shape of an airplane (or a butterfly, depending on who tells it), and the buildings are the work of Oscar Niemeyer. The Plano Piloto (Pilot Plan) complex has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
At about 1,170 meters above sea level, Brasília has two very distinct seasons. From October to March it rains almost every day, with hot afternoons and heavy showers. From June to September the rain nearly disappears and the humidity drops sharply, to the point that the Federal District's Civil Defense sometimes declares an alert or emergency. It is a truly dry climate, one that dries out the skin, eyes and throat.
What makes up for the dryness of the air is the sky. With no hills or tall buildings in the way, the horizon is immense, and the sunset over Lake Paranoá seen from the JK Bridge has become a ritual of the city. It is a capital of museums and empty plazas that look like a movie set, with nightlife concentrated in a few areas: it pays off less if you are after shopping or crowds, and more if you enjoy architecture, the country's recent history and some silence.

Brazil is in the Southern Hemisphere, so the seasons run opposite to those in Europe and North America. But in Brasília, what defines the year is not the cold but the rain: there is a dry season from June to September and a rainy one from October to March. Temperatures change little: in July, the coolest month, the average high is 25.6 °C and the low is 13.9 °C; September and October are the hottest, with highs of 29 °C.
For outdoor sightseeing and photos, the best time is June to September. July is the driest month, with 1.5 mm of rain and no rainy days; June records 3.3 mm over 1 day and August, 16.3 mm over 2 days. Average humidity drops to 51% in July and 43.5% in August, so it pays to bring moisturizer and drink plenty of water.
From October to March the cerrado turns greener, but it rains almost every day, mostly in the afternoon: November totals 253.1 mm over 17 days and December, 241.1 mm over 18 days. January (206 mm over 16 days) and March (226 mm over 15 days) follow the same pattern. April is the transition, with 145.2 mm over 9 days, and May is already back in the dry season, with 26.9 mm over 3 days.

The gateway from abroad is Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport (BSB), about 11 km from the Plano Piloto. By taxi or ride-hailing app you reach the center in 20 to 30 minutes; there is also a city bus.
Inside the city, keep in mind that Brasília was designed for the car. Distances between sectors are long and the subway covers few tourist spots, so to see the Eixo Monumental the most practical choice is a ride-hailing app or a rental car.
Since distances between sectors are long and public transportation reaches few tourist spots, it is best to choose a place to stay near what you most want to see: the Esplanada dos Ministérios and the Praça dos Três Poderes, or the Lake Paranoá and JK Bridge area, from where you can watch the sunset. What matters is to settle how you will get from one sector to another.

From June to September, when it barely rains (1.5 to 38 mm a month) and highs range from 25 to 29 °C. It is ideal for photos and sightseeing, but the air gets very dry. From October to March it rains almost every day, with the cerrado at its greenest.
Three to four days are enough for the essentials of the Plano Piloto: the Esplanada dos Ministérios, the Praça dos Três Poderes, the cathedral, the palaces and the sunset at the JK Bridge or the TV Tower, without rushing.

The city is in the cerrado, a biome with a pronounced dry season. In July average humidity drops to 51% and in August to 43.5%, and at times it falls to levels at which the Federal District's Civil Defense declares an alert or emergency.
It is highly recommended. The city was designed at the scale of the automobile, with sectors far apart and few public transportation options that reach the tourist spots. A rental car or a ride-hailing app solves it well.
