Trancoso is worth 3 to 4 days: the Quadrado at an easy pace, beaches like Nativos and Coqueiros, and a full day for Praia do Espelho. There is no clear dry season: the months with the least rain are September (129 mm over 13 days), August (134 mm over 16 days) and May (145 mm over 14 days), with highs of 26 to 28 °C; summer, from December to March, reaches 29 °C and is high season.
What to expect in Trancoso
Trancoso was once a simple fishing village clinging to a cliff in southern Bahia. The Jesuits founded the settlement in 1586 under the name São João Batista dos Índios, and the rammed-earth church that now presides over the Quadrado (the village's central square) was built in 1656. The place stayed almost forgotten by the rest of the country until the late 1970s, when hippies began to arrive, drawn by the isolation and the empty beaches. Since then it has become one of the most coveted destinations in Brazil, without entirely losing its village air: the streets are still sand, and to this day nobody walks them in high heels.
The heart of it all is the Quadrado: a long grass square lined with colorful 18th-century cottages, with the little church of São João Batista at the head, facing the sea. By day there is only silence and children playing on the grass; at night the houses turn into restaurants, art studios and designer shops, and the after-dinner stroll happens right there, among the tables on the sidewalk and the swarm of well-dressed people walking barefoot. Few places in Brazil concentrate so much sophistication in such a small, simple space.
The beaches lie below the Quadrado, down a flight of steps, and change name and character with each stretch of sand: Nativos, Coqueiros, Rio da Barra, Itapororoca. Farther south, almost on the road to Caraíva, is Praia do Espelho, with ocher-toned cliffs and natural pools that only appear at low tide. The sea is warm all year and the food is expensive and good. The real plan is to stay still: sit in a hammock, have a glass of wine, watch the sun go down behind the church.

Must-sees in Trancoso
The Quadrado
A colonial grass square lined with colorful 18th-century cottages, with the Church of São João Batista, built in 1656, at its head. It is the most photographed square in Bahia and the center of life in Trancoso, by day and by night.
Quadrado shops and restaurants
At night, the cottages around the grass turn into chef-run restaurants, art studios and designer shops. This is where the after-dinner stroll happens, with tables on the sidewalk and people walking around barefoot.
Praia dos Coqueiros
A quiet beach a few minutes' walk from the Quadrado, with calm water, natural pools at low tide and simple kiosks serving fried fish and coconut water.
Praia dos Nativos
One of the prettiest stretches near the Quadrado, with coconut palms along the shore, small waves and a river that flows into the beach.
Praia do Rio da Barra
Reddish cliffs and a river mouth form dams and natural pools of fresh and salt water, in a more secluded stretch of the Trancoso coast.
Praia de Itapororoca
A few kilometers south of the Quadrado, surrounded by cliffs and coconut groves, with calm water and few kiosks, one of the emptiest beaches in Trancoso.
Praia do Espelho
About 15 km from the Quadrado, already on the way to Caraíva. At low tide, natural pools appear between cliffs in shades of ocher and red. It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil.
Best time to visit Trancoso
Brazil is in the Southern Hemisphere, so the seasons are the reverse of those in Europe and North America: summer falls between December and March and winter between June and August. In Trancoso winter is mild: in July and August, the coolest months, the average high is 26 °C and the low is 19 °C. From December to March the average high is 29 °C. The reference climate is that of the Ilhéus station.
It rains all year and there is no clear dry season. The rainiest months are March, with 217 mm over 17 days, April, with 205 mm over 15 days, and June and July, with 201 mm each (16 and 18 days). The least rainy are September, with 129 mm over 13 days, August, with 134 mm over 16 days, and May, with 145 mm over 14 days.
That is why there is no ideal month: you can go all year, with warm sea in any month. December to March is high season, hotter and more crowded; outside summer the crowds thin and the Quadrado is quieter. For the natural pools at Praia do Espelho, the tide matters as well, not just the month. Expect some rain at any time of year and do not count on guaranteed clear weather.

Getting to Trancoso from abroad
Access is always through Porto Seguro: from Porto Seguro International Airport (BPS) to Trancoso is about 78 km. You can go by the BA-001 highway or cross by ferry to Arraial d'Ajuda and continue on a dirt road; either route takes about 1 h 20 min.

Hotels in Trancoso
It pays to choose a place near the Quadrado, where the village's life is concentrated and from where most of the beaches are within walking distance. The Quadrado has luxury pousadas (small inns), chef-run restaurants and designer shops; if you want to save money, you can stay a bit farther out or travel outside high season. Praia do Espelho is about 15 km away, so it is not a walk from the Quadrado: it is worth booking a car, a van or a tour for that day. Arraial d'Ajuda, the neighboring town, has more infrastructure and more affordable prices, and can be visited from Trancoso.
